Mombacho Volcano (Puma Trail)

The Destination: City of Granada

This tour leaves Granada at 9am, we will drive to the base of the volcano and from there, we will take a 4×4 to reach the 1150 meters above sea level. From there, we will start this amazing hike.

The 5th highest volcano in Nicaragua with 1345 meters above sea level, the first of only two cloud forests within the Pacific Coast of Nicaragua. Mombacho Volcano is guilty of having formed the most beautiful volcanic archipelago in Central America and is located on the shores of Lake Nicaragua. This Volcano undoubtedly deserves to be climbed to its most remote summit.

The Puma Trail on Mombacho Volcano is one of the most challenging and rewarding hikes available on this active volcano in Nicaragua. Located near Granada, Mombacho is known for its cloud forest, diverse wildlife, and stunning panoramic views. The Puma Trail, in particular, offers an immersive experience through the dense forest, leading you to areas less frequented by visitors. In a clear day, from the top of the volcano you could see Lake Nicaragua, City of Granada, Isletas Archipelago, Ometepe Island, Masaya Volcano, Apoyo Lagoon etc. Within this tour, We expect to see Mombacho’s most eye-catching flora and fauna, including bromeliads, orchids, and wildlife like monkeys, sloths, and the rare Mombacho salamander. Besides that, the Puma Trail skirts the edges of old lava flows and craters, giving hikers a close-up view of the geological activity that shaped the region.

The trail is 4 kms long and it will take us around 4 hours in total to climb it. In this tour, we will reach almost the very top of this hill. Once we are done, we will head back to Granada.
