Discover the natural treasures of Mombacho Volcano with two unforgettable experiences in one afternoon: a guided birdwatching tour through the lush cloud forest and a night walk where the volcano reveals its hidden nocturnal life. Located just outside Granada, Nicaragua, Mombacho’s high-altitude forests are a sanctuary for unique species and a paradise for nature lovers.
We begin this adventure by departing Granada at 3:00 pm, taking a short 30-minute drive to the base of Mombacho. From there, you’ll embark on a nearly 2-hour birdwatching tour along misty trails nestled into the volcano’s slopes, reaching up to 700 meters above sea level. As you wander through the dense vegetation, you’ll spot toucans, trogons, hummingbirds, and the colorful motmot — Nicaragua’s national bird. After the walk, unwind at a local farm with a warm cup of coffee and stunning panoramic views of Lake Nicaragua and the colonial city below.
At 6:00 pm, we hop into a 4×4 vehicle and ascend to 1,150 meters above sea level, where the night tour begins. Flashlights in hand, you’ll step into the mysterious world of the cloud forest under starlit skies. The highlight of this 1-hour night walk is spotting the elusive Bolitoglossa mombachoensis, also known as the Mombacho Salamander. This rare, lungless amphibian — found only on this volcano — breathes through its skin and thrives in the cool, damp environment of the summit.
After encountering this incredible creature and soaking in the forest’s nocturnal sounds — from frogs to owls — we’ll descend back to the base of Mombacho and return to Granada, completing a truly immersive experience in one of Nicaragua’s most iconic natural wonders.
